A good posture is essential for a healthy and energetic life. Unfortunately, many people suffer from poor posture, often caused by a sedentary lifestyle and bad habits. Here you can read what a good posture entails, why a bad posture can be problematic, and how specific exercises can help you.

The importance of a good posture
Good posture ensures a balanced body in which muscles and joints work together optimally. Important characteristics are a straight line from ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles, a neutral back, relaxed shoulders and a head positioned directly above the torso. This not only prevents pain, but also contributes to better breathing, more energy and a confident appearance.
The risks of poor posture
Poor posture can cause various health problems and has a negative impact on your overall wellbeing. It often leads to muscle and joint pain, especially in the neck, shoulders and lower back, because certain muscles become overloaded. In addition, a slumped posture can restrict breathing, resulting in a shallow and less efficient oxygen intake. In the long term, incorrect posture can also reduce mobility, causing stiffness and movement restrictions. By consciously working on better posture, you can prevent these complaints and keep your body healthy and strong.
The negative impact of a sedentary job
A sedentary job means that many people spend hours behind a desk or screen every day, which can have negative consequences for the body. Prolonged sitting often leads to muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, shortened hip flexors and hamstrings, and strain on the lower back. Without a conscious effort to improve posture, these complaints can accumulate and cause chronic problems in the long term. It is therefore essential to exercise regularly and adopt a healthy sitting posture.
Common postural problems
Posture problems are common and can have various causes and consequences. Poor posture can lead to extra strain on muscles and joints, which in the long term can cause pain and stiffness. These problems often arise from a combination of habits, such as a sedentary lifestyle, insufficient muscle strength or an incorrect way of moving.
Rounded shoulders: due to collapsed chest muscles and weak upper back muscles;
Rounded back: a ‘hump’ is caused by sitting hunched over for long periods;
Neck problems: often caused by a ’tech neck’ where your head hangs forward;
Back pain: is caused by poor posture or strain on the back muscles;
Common causes of poor (working) posture
Poor posture can be caused by various factors. A non-ergonomic workspace, such as an incorrectly adjusted chair or desk, can lead to poor sitting posture. In addition, a lack of movement plays a major role; sitting for prolonged periods without regular breaks can weaken muscles and build up tension. Daily habits, such as sitting crookedly, standing in the same way all the time or holding your phone low, can also contribute to posture problems. By being mindful of your posture and ergonomics, and moving regularly, you can reduce these negative effects and maintain a healthier body posture.
Exercises to improve your posture
With the right exercises, you can improve your posture, reduce muscle tension and prevent future problems. Regular exercise helps to correct muscle imbalances and support the stability of your spine. The following exercises have a positive effect on your overall posture:
Exercise #1: Shoulder Blade Squeeze
- Sit or stand up straight.
- Pull your shoulder blades towards each other and hold this position for 5 seconds.
- Relax and repeat 10 times.
- This exercise strengthens the muscles between your shoulder blades and opens up your chest.
Exercise #2 Cat-Cow Stretch
- Start on your hands and knees, with your wrists directly beneath your shoulders.
- Breathe in and arch your back (Cow).
- Breathe out and arch your back (Cat).
- Repeat this 10 times, slowly.
- This stretch improves the mobility of your spine and relaxes your back.
Exercise #3: Little Wall Angel
- Stand with your back against a wall, with your feet a few centimetres from the wall.
- Let your arms slide down the wall in a ‘W’ shape, then stretch them upwards into a ‘Y’ shape.
- Repeat this 10 times.
